Trauma and Chronic Pain

The experience of trauma can leave an imprint on the mind, brain and body. The most important issue for traumatized people is to reclaim safety through their own bodies.

I have witnessed how using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) makes it safe for my clients to remember what happened to them and heal. I use a “light bar” during treatment which enables eye movements for reprocessing. The modality requires approximately 8 sessions for the effects of trauma to lessen. It is an evidence-based process, advocated by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD, whom I have had the honor of working with in trainings. Dr Van Der Kolk is the author of the renowned book, “The Body Keeps the Score”. EMDR is best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it can also help with anxiety and depression disorders.

About 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain, but many don’t have to. Those suffering from pain are routinely told that there is no cure for pain. However I have had success using the principles of Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT). PRT rewires the brain to break out of the pain cycle. I have seen this evidence-based modality bring strength and stamina to my clients as they learn how to heal their own pain.
